The Biosphere Eco-City themes are transportation, energy, design, habitat, food, natural capital, waste control, health, recreation and a sense of place. These correspond to areas of interest as well as concrete areas of activity for sustainability.

Projects in Biosphere Eco-Cities are created to meet local needs, and their design reflects this. Because human processes are similar in many Eco-Cities, however, there are project themes that are common among them. These themes are a good starting point for project planning. As well, they are normally identified in project reports, to make it easier to share what was learned within the World Network of Biosphere Eco-Cities.

The Biosphere Eco-City model was proposed as an urban focus for UNESCO's MAB Program. Ottawa is the first pilot test of the model.
